Organic Search vs Paid Search

There are two types of Search Engine Result Page, namely Organic Search Result/Natural Search Result and Paid Search/ Per-per-Click (PPC) Result.  

 

Organic Search Results/Natural Search Result appears on the left of search engine result page. The results here are listed according to their relevance to the search keywords by the users. In order to be listed here, Search Engine Optimizer needs to understand the algorithm of each search engines and also the searchers behavior. The result does not appear in overnight but it takes about 8-10 weeks depending on how fast the search engine crawlers update your web content and index it.

 

According to http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-disconnect-in-ppc-vs-seo-spending , we can see only 11% of people investing in SEO compared to 89% advertise on PPC. But the visibility of search result is as below:

So visibility is considerably higher for the organic results. What about clicks?

 

Thanks to Comscore, we can see that clicks on paid search results have gone down over time, and is now ~22%.

In general, the viewing rate for organic search result/natural search result is 80% compared to paid result.

Opposing to Organic/Natural Search Result, there is another type of Search Engine Optimization called Pay-per-Click advertisement. Some people call it Sponsored Link; some people call them ad sense, or paid advertisement. In Pay-per-Click campaign, the advertisers (you) need to pay for every single click into your website. You can set a budget to run the Pay-per-Click campaign however your advertisement will disappear once your located budget is finished. Pay-per-Click result normally stays on the right corner of a search engine result page. You need to bid for high advertisement position. The higher the position you want, the more expensive the cost-per-click. If you bid for premium Pay-per-Click position, which appear the first on the left search result page, the cost is relatively high. Results for Pay-per-Click happened constantly. However, the viewing rate is only 20% of all.

 

From the simple comparison above, it is not hard to see internet searchers are more rely on Organic search result as it is relate to what they need. The results are not paid for. And in the long run, the cost needed for Organic Search Result is much lower than Pay-per-Click campaign.
